Indian contingent were led by Abhinav Bindra wearing a blue suit and sarees for the women. The team entered at approximately 6.15 AM IST.

The 31st Olympiad was open in Rio de Janeiro after a stunning opening ceremony at the Maracana football stadium. All 207 countries and for the first time a Refugee team walked at the traditional Parade of Nations. As part of the tradition, Greece were first to march forward followed by other countries in alphabetical order in the Portuguese language. The Refugee team was the second last to enter the arena and the last were hosts Brazil. In a stunning opening ceremony, Rio showcased the evolution of human life in Brazil alongwith with the arrival of Europeans and later the Asians. Then it moved to the complementary world.

India entered the arena at approximately 6.15 AM IST on Saturday morning led by shooter Abhinav Bindra who is participating in his final Olympic games.

After the Parade of Nations, IOC president and chairman of the Olympic organising committee Nuzman addressed the gathering and later acting president of Brazil Michel Temer announced the Games open.
