MC Mary Kom not in Rio Olympics 2016

Mangte Chungneijang Mary Kom, better known as Mary Kom, is an Indian boxer hailing from the Kom tribe in Manipur. She is a five-time World Amateur Boxing champion, and the only woman boxer to have won a medal in each one of the six world championships. Nicknamed “Magnificent Mary”, she is the only Indian woman boxer to have qualified for the 2012 Summer Olympics, competing in the flyweight (51 kg) category and winning the bronze medal.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) made decision that nations which has not had more than eight boxers in the last two games will be granted the card. India had eight boxers in London itself with seven men and Mary Kom.

Wildcards were made available to all the National Olympic Committees participating in the Olympics, but with the IOC’s decision, Mary Kom’s chances of participating in the Olympic are over now. However, India did try to get a triparte card for Rio Olympics 2016 so that Mary Kom can secure a berth in the forthcoming Games.
