Which sports will Team India compete in on day 12 of the Rio Olympics?
Day 12 of the Rio Olympics 2016 will see Indians in action across four sports – golf, badminton, wrestling and athletics.
Who will be the Indian athletes in action?
India’s day will begin with Aditi Ashok, teeing off in the women’s individual golf opening round. While the male golfers, Anirban Lahiri and SSP Chawrasia, couldn’t do much in the sport, which returned to the Olympics after 112 years, Aditi will be hoping to make her mark.
Aditi, 18, has been a sensation ever since she won the qualifying finals to earn a full card on the Ladies European Tour (LET). Her experience – having represented India at the Asian Youth Games in 2013, Youth Olympic Games in 2014, and Asian Games in 2014 – will come in handy.
Shuttler Kidambi Srikanth will face the enormous task of beating two-time Olympic gold medallist and five-time world champion Lin Dan of China in the quarter-finals of the men’s singles badminton event. It will be the fourth meeting between them, with the Chinese dominating twice, but Srikanth had an upper hand at their last meeting at the 2014 China Masters.
Also beginning their campaign on Wednesday will be India’s female wrestlers. Vinesh Phogat in 48kg and Sakshi Malik in 58kg categories will be action in the women’s wrestling event. Sakshi Malik will take on Sweden’s Johanna Mattsson in the qualification round, while Vinesh Phogat will meet Romania’s Emilia Alina Vuc in the round of 16 of women’s freestyle wrestling.
In athletics, Tintu Luka will be in action in the women’s 800m heats. She will be part of Heat 3.
What time will these events happen? (all times in IST)
The women’s individual golf round one will start at 4.00 PM.
Srikanth’s men’s badminton quarterfinal match against Lin Dan is scheduled for 5.50 PM. It will be broadcast after the previous match between Lee Chong Wei and Chou Tein-chen will end.
Sakshi Malik’s opening wrestling bout against Johanna Mattsson will take place at 6.38 PM, while Vinesh Phogat’s round of 16 match with Emilia Alina Vuc will follow at 7.02 PM.
Tintu Luka’s 800m heats are scheduled to begin at for 7.39 PM.
What are India’s medal prospects?
The only potential medal events for India will be in women’s wrestling, conditional to Vinesh Phogat and Sakshi Malik notching up wins.
