The preview for the Universal Pictures reboot sees protagonist Tyler Colt (Tom Cruise) assure love interest Jenny Halsey (Annabelle Wallis) that The Mummy’s (Sofia Boutella) powers are real.
Russell Crowe co-stars as Dr. Henry Jekyll, with additional roles by Jake Johnson and Courtney B. Vance. The movie is directed by Transformers and Star Trek co-writer Alex Kurtzman, and will release a full trailer Sunday.
“I’m excited to help bring #TheMummy to life. I can’t wait for you guys to see the full trailer Sunday,” Cruise tweeted to his 6.11 million followers.
Universal Pictures first released The Mummy with Boris Karloff in 1932, and has rebooted the franchise several times since. Brendan Fraser led a trilogy of films released between 1999 and 2008.
“What’s really exciting for me is how do you take this ancient creature and make an audience believe that they exist in modern day?” Kurtzman said of the movie’s present-day setting in an interview with Slash Film in September.
The Mummy opens in theaters June 9, 2017. Cruise will also star in M:I 6 – Mission Impossible with Rebecca Ferguson, while Boutella is slated for The Coldest City with James McAvoy.
Universal Pictures had previously scheduled the film to be released on March 24, 2017, but has now reportedly postponed the release to June 9, 2017. Before that, the film was also scheduled for several dates including April 22, 2016 and then June 24, 2016, when Universal announced the April 22 for The Huntsman: Winter’s War.
You may have missed the news, but fan favorite The Mummy is getting a reboot, and it’ll star Tom Cruise in the role first held by Brendan Fraser. Universal has finally given us our first look at the movie, doing so in two forms: a theatrical poster and a 15-second teaser. The teaser, as we’d expect, features an ancient monster, ancient artifacts, and Tom Cruise running really fast.
The teaser trailer you see below will be followed up on Sunday by the first full-length trailer. No doubt we’ll get a better look at the reboot’s mummy and the wider story overall when that trailer arrives, but the teaser below does a decent job of covering all the bases: sarcophagus, living ancient being, military meddling, and such.
